Nerve:  Superior gluteal
 
Compartment:   Buttocks (gluteal)
 
Skeletal muscles:  Tensor fascia lata and gluteus medius and minimus
 
Cutaneous distribution:  None
 
Neuromuscular deficit:  Impaired hip abduction provokes a positive Trendelenburg sign where the pelvis drops to the unsupported (contralateral) side of weakness/paralysis. During stance patients place the weight of their upper trunk over the supporting limb to shift the center of gravity over the side of impairment. No cutaneous nerve deficit accompanies motor dysfunction.
